Semi trimmed-

Here is one of my apple trees. I have spent a lot of time this afternoon trimming this and cutting up the pieces. I got about half a trash barrel full so far of trimmings. This is the stubborn one that only gave apples two years out of the past twenty five. 😡 More to do tomorrow.

these are the tools i use most on tree trimming and land clearing
at far left: fiskars pruning stik - it easily cuts branches up to an inch thick almost 6' above you. also very useful for cutting seedling trees down at ground level without having to bend over
next over from it: fiskars lopper, forget the model - these will cut almost 2" thick oak branches (green) if you've got the power for it. i use them mostly to cut smaller branches off of bigger branches that i've cut from a tree to make a neat pile that's easier to manage; also cut lower medium branches off of trees that are too close to the ground (we trim up at least 6' to avoid "fire ladders")
yellow thing: tree saver strap - used to anchor a winch to a tree
bag with rope: that's a hand winch which uses a rope. usually used to put tension on a tree to encourage it to fall a certain way when cutting it; there's 100' of rope and the winch doesn't accumulate it on a spool so you can just keep winching. rope winches are NOT for pulling cars - the rope is good for 1500# which is almost nothing compared to a stuck car, and this rope is super springy so if it breaks it's going to whip really fast and dangerously
blue poles: modular pole saw. the poles are super light, hollow fiberglass with aluminum ends that snap together. you can use an end unit on a single segment or connect 2, 3 or 4 segments together to increase reach. easy to use with one or two segments; a bit floppy with three, and difficult to use with 4 (i rarely use 4, but often 3)
the saw for the pole system is super sharp and can cut through a 4" oak branch in a minute or two. still a good shoulder, tricep and bicep exercise!
there are also two sizes of loppers you can put on the pole. the smaller one has a single pulley and is lighter, pretty easy to use, but the fiskars one is still preferred if it can reach. the bigger lopper can cut 1½" branches, but it's a heavy thing at the end of a springy pole so it can be a struggle to use. still, without a bucket truck, the only way to get some branches... it's got a two-pulley system so you have to pull the cord a long ways to get the cut.
i only occasionally use the lopper parts because they're a pain, but i can get mistletoe bunches out of trees up to about 24' off the ground with it if i'm determined
the orange saw is the newest addition. it's a battery saw, super light and dangerously good. i splurged; it's a pro saw and so far i have zero regrets about buying it. it replaced a slightly larger gas saw that quite regularly ran terribly with an air intake system that would just clog instantly with dust and sawdust and let half of it into the carb. fuck that. this one i can use and put right down without it still running or threatening to start a fire if you put it down in the wrong spot
and it's so light that you can do lots of cuts without getting tired, and the battery lasts longer than i do, no stink and no noise like the gas saw
too small for cutting all but smaller trees down but that's a job for the big saw, though that's rarely used here

Oh God, I have trimmed all the trees around the house so perfectly that this year's new growth is proceeding in perfect accordance with and fulfillment of my plans, I just did a full circuit and there were only like five shoots that were not merely dead ends (I'll trim them in winter, after their production gets sucked down thickening trunks on the way in fall) but actually in the way of things that could influence their growth to be less than ideal.
Also all the canopies I opened up huge gaps in in the upper backyard when I first started fixing their structure are filling in this year or next and it looks great, cathedral ceiling with two canopies meeting at the apex, if those trees grew so much since I arrived they were maybe even only 15 years established back then.
Also the black walnut in the lower back regrowing nice and bushy, it's really still in the stage of getting enough sun for enough growth next year (an adult snapped a few years ago and this is shoots from the cut stump), plenty of legacy roots so it's not gonna bottleneck on water or nutrients, just let that continue for a few years but keep an eye on developing some leader as a new trunk.
